The World Cup brings the best international teams from all over the world together for a month-long festival of football, and Russia 2018 will be no exception.

From previous Champions like Brazil, Germany and France to unproven heavy-hitters like Belgium and Portugal, there are dozens of potentially mouth-watering match-ups that could happen at the World Cup Finals.

Now, while there’s no possible way to predict who will play each other just yet as not all teams have qualified and the groups have not yet been decided, but it is possible to speculate on what match-ups could serve up the tastiest encounters of the tournament.

Bet on Brazil vs Argentina

The biggest game in South America and one of the most enticing prospects in World Football. It’s hard to fathom a game more entertaining than this – two attacking sides with enormous pedigree in World Football, playing against each other in the competition to decide which country is the best.

Add the narrative surrounding former teammates and respective captains Neymar and Lionel Messi, and this game, if it were to occur, would be perhaps the most talked about of the entire competition.

Brazil, who suffered an embarrassing exit at their home tournament in 2014, whereas Argentina reached the final only narrowly losing to a classy Germany, will be hoping to build upon the momentum achieved from an outstanding qualifying campaign.

The opposite can be said of the Argentines, who have not yet qualified for the tournament, but will be hopeful of at least making a playoff, especially considering the talent in their squad, particularly going forward, with the likes of Messi, Paolo Dybala, Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain.

Bet on Portugal vs Spain

Cristiano Ronaldo

Two neighbouring countries, both with significant footballing pedigree and points to prove at World Cup 2018. In the last decade, there hasn’t been a team in World football that can hold a candle to the Spanish international team, that won 3 major trophies in 4 years between 2008-2012, but since the World Cup in Brazil, they’ll be hoping to reach their dizzying heights once more.

Portugal, fresh from perhaps surprisingly being crowned champions of Europe in 2016, will want to continue their momentum and become World Champions and in the process, potentially immortalising talismanic captain Cristiano Ronaldo as the greatest to ever play the game.

If the two sides meet, you can be certain of an intense game – the last time they met in a competitive competition was 2012, with the game only being won by the Spanish on penalties after a closely fought 120 minutes.

Bet on England vs Germany

Harry Kane

A game that has been played several times at the highest level, and one that always captivates viewers from all over the world – be it on account of England’s greatest ever moment, beating the Germans in the World Cup final in 1966; or four years later when the Germans got their revenge in encapsulating World Cup tie; to 2010, where the German’s dominated after England’s infamous “ghost” goal.

If the two superpowers of World football were to come up against each other once more, there’s a good chance the Germans will be highly fancied because of their success in recent times and their immense squad, but due to these countries rivalry, England would give themselves a chance.

Bet on France vs Italy

This would be a replay of the controversial 2006 World Cup final – a game mainly remembered for a Zinedine Zidane headbutt and red card in extra time, before Italy went on to win the game on penalties.

Since that crazy game, both teams have struggled to emulate their success, with the French often failing to live up to expectations at tournaments and the Italians, bar a Euro 2012 Final appearance, often out of the running early in the competition.

There is a sense that this has changed for both sides in recent times, however, with both teams having solid qualifying campaigns and plenty of exciting, youthful players making their way into the sides.  If the two European countries were to get drawn against each other, viewers would be in for one of the tightest games of the World Cup.

Bet on Uruguay vs Ghana

Eight years ago, when Ghana were hoping to reach the furthest point of any African team ever playing at a World Cup, Uruguay and star striker Luis Suarez, cheated them out of a semi-final appearance. After a tight 1-1 game that went the whole way to 120 minutes, the Uruguayan striker handballed to clear a ball off the line, bringing the game to penalties, that Uruguay went onto win.

The game was one of the most controversial and memorable of recent times, and if Ghana and Luis Suarez and his nation were to meet once more, it would be a mouth-watering prospect.

Bet on France vs Belgium

France football team

On paper, these two teams have two of the most exciting squads that will be playing at the world cup. Two entire selections filled with exceptional talents – For France, the likes of Paul Pogba, Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann; for Belgium, Romelu Lukaku, Dries Mertens and Eden Hazard, among many more for both.

If the two sides, both desperately eager to perform well on the world stage, were to come face to face, it would perhaps be the game at the World Cup finals with the most big-name players on show and would surely serve up an entertaining match-up at Russia 2018.

These are a list of some of the games that could happen, but the great thing with the World Cup is that nearly every single game is worth watching – there’s always great teams involved, and oftentimes, a game you may not expect to excite turns out to be the most captivating.
